Got Thanks?

By Lee and Ken Estridge

Every Thanksgiving we gather with our family and take turns sharing what we're thankful for in our lives. It's always interesting to hear what is most meaningful for each person, and how easy or difficult it is for them to think about and share what they are thankful for in their lives.

Gratitude

In the spirit of our Thanksgiving tradition, we'd like to ask you to think about whether or not you take the time to express your appreciation for the people in your life. Do you let them know that you value what they do every day, or do you take their effort for granted? In our work with clients, we find that many people have an easier time complaining about what isn't working. Both leaders and employees tend to look for what's wrong and spend less time thinking about what's working well. Generally speaking, when people are pleased with something, they tell a few people. But, when something goes askew, people will complain to just about anyone who will listen! While just listening to negative content can be draining, the opposite holds true--positive energy is uplifting.

Taking Stock

Thanksgiving provides us with an opportunity to share with others what we appreciate most about them and what we are thankful for in our lives. In this year of many challenges, where so many people have lost their homes or loved ones, many of us have much to be grateful for. We encourage you to use this month to take stock of what you are thankful for and share your gratitude with everyone who matters to you in your professional and personal life.

We are thankful to those of you who read our newsletters every month, and we wish you a happy and peaceful Thanksgiving.
