Is Change Your Friend, Foe, or Both?

By Lee and Ken Estridge

How we feel about change has a lot to do with how we live our lives and function as business leaders. Many corporate giants of the past have disappeared or dramatically dwindled because of their inability to shift their business models and ultimately adapt to changes in the market. Kodak, Polaroid, Borders, and Block Buster are just a few.

In 1998, Spencer Johnson, MD published, Who Moved My Cheese? It was a simple parable that revealed profound truths about change. Eastman Kodak was one of the companies that provided an endorsement for the book! Johnson's book is even more important today because the rate of change is accelerating and each of us needs to learn how to effectively manage change in all areas our lives.

As we think about how change impacts our personal and professional lives, it can be helpful to reflect on these seven questions:

  1. What is your relationship to change?
  2. Do you look forward to change happening?
  3. Do you actively promote change?
  4. Do you forecast change and plan accordingly?
  5. Do you resist change and feel scared by change?
  6. Does change provide you with opportunities, challenges, or both?
  7. Is change your friend or your enemy?

As coaches, we're agents of change, and we help individuals anticipate and adapt to the changes that are inevitable in their personal and professional lives. We also help individuals articulate the shifts they would like to enact, and we facilitate in making these changes a reality.

Always changing and always growing!
